JAKARTA - Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Muhammad Tito Karnavian invites local people to use the wood logs carried away by the flood in Aceh to build, repair houses, and for post-disaster recovery activities.

Tito said this was a direction from President Prabowo Subianto which had been conveyed some time ago.

"The policy of the President during the last meeting, including in Hambalang, the direction to us, please use the community or the government for (post-disaster recovery)," said Tito as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, January 26.

Tito, as the Head of the Task Force (Kasatgas) for the Acceleration of Rehabilitation and Reconstruction after the Disaster in Sumatra, revealed that the logs were found on the border between East Aceh and North Aceh.

"Well, many have done it by cutting it and then making it into boards to build houses, bridges, and others," he said.

However, Tito said there was quite a lot of wood that could not be used for construction because of its too small size.

However, there are a number of regional heads who assess that the small-sized wood logs can still be used for public purposes.

"There is a suggestion from several regional heads, 'Sir, what if it is taken to be carried out by BUMD and sold to third parties, for example, PLTU'," said Tito.

The Minister of Home Affairs said that there are PLTU in North Sumatra that need wood as fuel for power plants, as well as local brick industries that need fuel for brick production, which can later be used for development in the Sumatran area.

"There are also local industries such as bricks, brick making, they keep asking whether they can take the wood or not, because it is difficult to find wood," he said.

Regarding this, the Minister of Home Affairs asked the Minister of Forestry, Raja Juli Antoni, to provide guidance on how the procedures for using the wood. The use of the wood, in addition to being useful for the recovery process, of course, also helps accelerate the cleaning of the area from the lowest material of the flood, in this case the logs.
