JAKARTA - Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Mendiktisaintek) Brian Yuliarto emphasized that universities have a strategic role in producing superior talent as well as presenting solutions to various national problems through education, research, and innovation that have a real impact on society.
The statement was made by Brian Yuliarto when attending a series of activities for the 63rd anniversary of Darussalam University (Unida) Gontor in Ponorogo, East Java, Sunday. On that occasion, the Minister of Education and Technology emphasized the importance of building Indonesian human resources (HR) who are not only superior in mastering science and technology, but also have integrity, morals, and a spirit of dedication to the community.
"This nation needs breakthroughs from universities. Not only producing scientific publications, but also being able to solve various problems in the region through research results, theses, and dissertations that are applicable," said Brian Yuliarto.
According to Brian, universities must be the center of innovation that can answer the challenges of national development. Therefore, the results of research and academic works need to be directed to provide direct benefits to the community and support regional progress.
The Minister of Education and Technology also appreciated the performance of Pondok Modern Gontor which for a century has consistently produced cadres of the nation with integrity and good character. In the midst of various challenges faced by Indonesia, according to him, this nation needs more leaders who have strong characters and are not easily tempted by personal interests.
He assessed that the philosophy of Gontor education was in line with the Diktisaintek Berdampak program which encouraged the use of science as a means of bringing tangible benefits to the community. Therefore, Brian encouraged universities to strengthen collaboration with local governments, the business world, and the community so that the research produced is able to answer the needs in the field.
Brian hopes that Unida Gontor can become a driving force for development in Ponorogo Regency through various innovations that are implemented directly, ranging from waste management, the agricultural sector, health services, to urban development.
"Advanced universities not only produce qualified graduates and scientific publications, but are also able to make a real contribution to the surrounding environment," he said.
On the same occasion, Minister of Education and Technology Brian Yuliarto appreciated the launch of the Unida Gontor Faculty of Medicine. He hopes that the faculty will be able to produce doctors who have a spirit of dedication and are ready to serve in areas that still lack health workers.
In addition, Brian also appreciated the 100 Doctors for 100 Years of Gontor program which was considered a strategic step in improving the quality of human resources and the competitiveness of Indonesian higher education.
According to him, Indonesia's progress can only be achieved if the mastery of science and technology goes hand in hand with integrity, morality, and religious values. Therefore, the development of superior human resources must be a priority for all universities in the country.
To strengthen the impact of research results, the Minister of Education and Technology encouraged Unida Gontor and other universities to accelerate the commercialization of research through the development of startups and innovation-based industries. This step is considered important so that academic works do not stop as research reports or scientific publications only, but rather develop into products and solutions that provide economic and social benefits to the community.
"A progressive campus must have startups and industries that are a container for giving birth to and continuing campus innovation works, so that it does not stop at books or written works, but can be turned into a more advanced and useful industry," he said.
