Google has added new information to help users know whether an ad was created or edited with artificial intelligence. However, for ads created outside of Google's services, the accuracy of the information still depends on the information from the advertiser.

CNET quoted Sunday, July 12, saying the feature is available in the "How this ad was made" section of the My Ads Center panel. The panel can be opened through the three-point menu or information icon on an ad on Google Search, YouTube, and Discover.

This feature comes as the use of generative AI in the advertising industry continues to increase. Generative AI is a technology that can create new content, such as images, text, voice, or video, based on user commands.

For advertisers, the technology can speed up production, cut costs, and open up more creative options. But for consumers, the results can be confusing, too.

A product, for example, can be displayed in an atmosphere or environment that never actually existed. Such visuals can influence purchase decisions, especially when users are unaware that the advertising material has been created or altered with AI.

Google said ads created using its generative AI tool will be accompanied by a note in the My Ads Center panel.

For ads created through other platforms, advertisers can tell Google whether AI was used in the creation process. This information can then determine the label that appears directly on the ad.

However, Google will not actively check the truth of every statement made by advertisers.

"Advertisers are responsible for accurately labeling their ads and complying with local laws," a Google spokesperson told CNET.

In countries or regions that require the labeling of AI-generated content, ads can be labeled according to applicable regulations.

This new feature continues Google's move to clarify the use of AI in digital content. In May, the company introduced SynthID, an invisible digital watermark that helps identify AI-generated content.

SynthID is one of the AI transparency tools in Google's technology ecosystem, including Gemini.
