JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung admitted that Jakarta was almost certain to experience flooding if rainfall exceeded 200 millimeters per day. According to him, this condition is related to the limited capacity of the water catchment area in the capital.

Pramono made this statement even though he currently claims that the handling of floods in Jakarta has been relatively handled. The puddles that had occurred had receded and traffic activity was back to normal.

"Even though it's still called Jakarta, if the rainfall is above 200, it's certain, there will be flood management," said Pramono in Kembangan, West Jakarta, Monday, January 26.

To anticipate the potential for high rainfall in the near future, Pramono asked the Water Resources (SDA) Sub-Directorate to take preventive measures. This request is based on data from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) which predicts that rainfall will still be high.

One of the steps that the DKI Provincial Government continues to take is dredging rivers and waterways. Pramono said that dredging was carried out on an ongoing basis with the support of hundreds of heavy equipment spread throughout the Jakarta area.

"I have ordered the Water Resources Office to carry out dredging from, continuously. Because we have 200 excavators and so on," said Pramono.

"The problem is that the catchment is insufficient. So even though everything is dredged, there is no additional sediment, it is only able to accommodate 150 millimeters of rainfall per day in Jakarta," he added.

He gave an example of the rain on January 12, 18, and 22 which triggered flooding due to high rainfall intensity in a short time and the arrival of water from upstream areas.

So, for the short term, Pramono also ordered the implementation of weather modification operations to reduce the impact of extreme rain.

Meanwhile, in the medium term, the DKI Provincial Government will continue to normalize the three main rivers in Jakarta, namely the Ciliwung River, Krukut, and Old Cakung. The normalization is targeted to start running gradually in the near future.

"If the Ciliwung is immediately started by the central government, with the Ministry of PU, to make what, embankments and so on. Meanwhile, for Krukut and Cakung Lama we started this year. Well, if that can be done, then in the medium term we have made anticipations," he said.
