Taufiq Ismail's House of Poetry is Now Officially an Indonesian Literary Museum

PADANG PANJANG - Culture Minister Fadli Zon reactivated the Taufiq Ismail Poetry House in Padang Panjang, Saturday, January 24. The literary space, which has stood since 2008, is now emphasized as a Museum of Indonesian Literature, a documentation center for the works and traces of the history of national literature.

Fadli emphasized that this activity was not a new inauguration, but a strengthening of the function of a public space that has been alive for a long time. The House of Poetry is considered to have a long track record as a meeting place for writers, cultural figures, and artists from various countries. Since last year, this space has developed not only as Taufiq Ismail's poetry house, but as a literary museum.

According to Fadli, the museum contains thousands of works and memorabilia, ranging from the Indonesian literature library, the writer's typewriter, H.B. Jassin's handwriting, to the archive of poetry readings. He assessed that this model of a writer's house is common in various countries as an education center and cultural destination.

Taufiq Ismail said this transformation expanded the function of the House of Poetry as a house of memory of civilization. He hopes that the place will become a source of knowledge and inspiration, especially for the younger generation of West Sumatra.

This activation is also seen as strategic in the midst of literacy challenges and the lack of literary public spaces. The government encourages the Taufiq Ismail Poetry House to develop as a productive cultural pocket, not just a storage space for archives.

The inauguration was attended by officials from the West Sumatra Provincial Government, Padang Panjang City Government, members of the DPRD, and art activists. The Ministry of Culture through the relevant directorate also supports the strengthening of facilities and management of this cultural space.
