JAKARTA - Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Thursday that the Gaza Peace Council offered a historic opportunity to build lasting peace in the region.
In his post on the Turkish social media NSosyal, Foreign Minister Fidan wrote, "Peace Council," of which President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is also a founding member, offers a "historic opportunity" to alleviate the prolonged suffering of the people of Gaza, meet their humanitarian needs, and build "lasting and inclusive peace in the region."
He recounted how he attended the signing ceremony of the Charter of the Peace Council for Gaza in Davos, Switzerland on behalf of President Erdogan.
"We believe that by working hand in hand with the people of Gaza, the Peace Council will play a crucial role in shaping the future of Gaza, helping the region to recover, and allowing peace to take root," said Foreign Minister Fidan, launching Anadolu (23/1).
Foreign Minister Fidan reiterated Turkey's determination that a possible future is one in which the voices of the people of Gaza are heard, their rights are protected, and they can live in peace.
Last week, the White House announced the formation of a joint Peace Council in conjunction with the approval of the National Committee for Gaza Administration, one of four appointed bodies to manage the transition phase in the region.
The formation of the council coincides with the launch of the second phase of a ceasefire agreement that halted Israel's war in Gaza, which has killed more than 71,000 people and injured more than 171,000 others since October 2023.
It is known that this initiative is part of a 20-point plan proposed by US President Donald Trump and adopted by the UN Security Council based on Resolution 2803 last November.
