JAKARTA - The Head of the Surabaya Major City Police (Kapolrestabes) Kombes Pol. Luthfie Sulistiawan issued a firm instruction to his ranks to carry out on-the-spot shooting for perpetrators of motor vehicle theft (curanmor) that endanger the community.
"I have ordered the Head of Criminal Investigation Unit, don't hesitate," said Kombes Pol Luthfie, at the Evidence Return Bazaar at the Surabaya Police Headquarters, East Java, Wednesday.
He explained that for perpetrators of curanmor who endanger officers and the community when committing motor vehicle theft, officers can take firm and measured action.
He reminded perpetrators to abandon motor vehicle theft actions that disturb and harm the community.
"Perpetrators of curanmor who endanger the safety of officers and the community, just shoot. Stop your actions, or we will stop you," he said.
In the Goods Return Evidence Bazaar activity, the Surabaya Police returned hundreds of evidence in the form of motor vehicles from seizures originating from a number of cases such as motor vehicle theft and traffic control to their owners.
He explained that out of the total 1,050 vehicles collected, 107 units were the latest arrests which are currently in the identification phase from the beginning of 2025 to January 2026.
Although some vehicles suffered damage to the frame and engine numbers due to the perpetrator's actions, his party is committed to continuing to track down the original owner.
Regarding the procedure for taking motor vehicles, he guaranteed full transparency and ensured that no costs were charged to the victim.
"I assure you that this service is free. If there is an officer who asks for a fee, ask how much it is, I will return it tenfold. This is our commitment to provide maximum service to the public," he said.
As a long-term preventive measure, the Surabaya Police also distributed anti-theft motorcycle alarms to 30 lucky residents during the Evidence Return Bazaar activity.
"If the total is 200 units, the alarm will be distributed for free to residents. We distribute 30 alarms here to the lucky ones," he said.
He added that people who lost their motorcycles were urged to immediately check the vehicle list at the Surabaya Police with ownership documents such as BPKB or a letter of certification from the financing party (leasing).
Meanwhile, one of the victims of a job vacancy (locker) fraud and motor theft in Surabaya from Gresik named Ayu Kemalia, admitted that he lost his motorcycle in the Kutisari area, Surabaya on December 11, 2025.
He explained that the incident began when he was invited to meet someone at a warung makan in the Kutisari area. The perpetrator then borrowed a motorcycle with the excuse of taking files. The victim then lent his motorcycle, but the perpetrator did not return after some time.
"Only 10 minutes later I realized that the motorcycle was stolen. The incident was on December 11," he said.
After getting confirmation that his motorcycle was taken during the Return of Evidence Goods Bazaar, he and his husband immediately went to the Surabaya Police.
Furthermore, he thanked the Surabaya Police and its members who had helped the community to find and take serious action regarding the theft case.
"I am very grateful because my motorcycle was found only within two weeks after the report. The service of the Tenggilis Mejoyo Police Criminal Investigation Unit and the Surabaya Police is very prompt," he said.
