JAKARTA - The Regional Meteorological, Climatology, and Geophysics Center (BBMKG) Region II issued an early warning regarding the potential for heavy to very heavy rain and coastal flooding (rob) which is expected to hit the Banten Province area in the period 17-22 January 2026.

Head of the Regional Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Center (BMKG) II, Hartanto, through a written statement, quoted by Antara, Saturday, January 17, said that this extreme weather condition was triggered by various atmospheric phenomena, ranging from the strengthening of the Asian Monsoon, sea surface temperature anomalies, to the presence of Tropical Cyclone 96S.

"Based on the analysis, the potential for heavy to very heavy rain on January 17-19, 2026 needs to be watched out for in Tangerang Regency and City, South Tangerang, South Lebak, and West and South Pandeglang," said Hartanto.

Meanwhile, for the northern Lebak Regency, northern and central Pandeglang, Cilegon City, and Serang Raya, it is predicted that they will experience moderate to heavy intensity rain in the same period.

Apart from the potential rain, Hartanto also highlighted the New Moon phase on January 19, 2026 which has the potential to increase the height of the sea tide.

He asked people in coastal areas to be aware of the potential for flash floods, which is predicted to occur on January 18-22, 2026.

"The areas that are potentially affected by flash floods include the North Coast of Tangerang, the North Coast of Serang, the South Coast of Pandeglang, and the South Coast of Lebak," he said.

His party also warned of the potential for strong winds with speeds of more than 25 knots on January 18-21, 2026, especially in the western and southern Pandeglang Regency, the southern Lebak, and the western Serang Regency.

Hartanto explained that this warning is important to note considering that in the last week the Banten region has experienced a significant increase in rainfall.

High rainfall was recorded in Serang Regency reaching 148 mm/day, Lebak 145 mm/day, and Pandeglang 124 mm/day. This condition has previously triggered floods that have not receded in Cikande District, Serang Regency and Jayanti, Tangerang Regency, as well as landslides in Bayah District, Lebak Regency.

"We appeal to the public, especially in disaster-prone areas, to take anticipatory steps and continue to monitor official weather information through the InfoBMKG application or social media @bmkgwilayah2," he said.
