TANGERANG - North Kalimantan (Kaltara) Governor Zainal Arifin Paliwang is advocating the opening of an international flight route from Juata Tarakan Airport to Tawau, Sabah (Malaysia).

This joint effort with the Provincial Government (Pemprov) of North Maluku was carried out through a joint meeting with the management of PT Indonesia AirAsia at AirAsia Redhouse, Tangerang, Banten, Monday, January 12.

"This flight route from Tarakan to Tawau City is very important for Kaltara, which is a border province. Because, this direct flight will strengthen international connectivity and facilitate community mobility," said Governor Zainal.

"Moreover, Tarakan is the gateway to Kaltara, this Tarakan-Tawau route will open wider access and encourage economic activity in the border area," he continued.

Zainal revealed that the opening of this route has the potential to increase the trade, tourism, and investment sectors.

"For this reason, the North Kalimantan Provincial Government is ready to support this plan, in accordance with regional authority through cross-sectoral coordination, policy support, and air transportation infrastructure readiness," he said.

AirAsia welcomed the proposal to open the Tarakan-Tawau flight route and stated that it would conduct further studies on operational, technical, and passenger market potential.

"We hope that the plan to open the Tarakan-Tawau international flight route can be realized soon to strengthen regional connectivity and support the acceleration of regional development," he said.
