JAKARTA - The Russian Ambassador to Venezuela, Sergey Melik-Bagdasarov, emphasized that the partnership and strategic cooperation agreement between Russia and Venezuela remains the only benchmark for further development of bilateral relations.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil on Friday, January 10, said he had met with Sergey Melik-Bagdasarov and received assurances of support and solidarity from Moscow after the US attack on Venezuela.

"The intergovernmental agreement on strategic partnership and cooperation, which has come into force, is the only guiding principle for further comprehensive strengthening of our relations," the Russian ambassador told RIA Novosti after his meeting with Yvan Gil, reported by ANTARA from Sputnik.

"The implementation of the tasks identified during bilateral contacts at the highest and broadest levels, including following up on the results of the 19th meeting of the Russian-Venezuelan high-level intergovernmental commission that was just held, will certainly continue," he added.

Earlier this month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed Russia's commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with Venezuela during a telephone conversation with Delcy Rodriguez, following the US attack on Venezuela and the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law ratifying a Strategic Partnership and Cooperation Agreement with Venezuela in late October.

On May 7, 2025, Putin and Maduro held talks in Moscow and signed an agreement on strategic partnership and cooperation, which encouraged increased cooperation in the economic, energy, mining, and other strategic sectors.

The agreement states that both parties strongly oppose unilateral coercive and restrictive measures, including those of an extraterritorial nature, which are in violation of the UN Charter and other universally recognized norms and principles of international law.

Both parties also agreed to contribute to the establishment of an independent Russian-Venezuelan financial infrastructure.

Based on the agreement, both parties will cooperate on issues of arms control, disarmament, and non-proliferation, which are expected to ensure international stability and equal and indivisible security for all countries without exception.
