JAKARTA - A brawl between two groups of students broke out on Jalan Otto Iskandar Dinata (Otista), Bidara Cina, East Jakarta, on the second day of school after the long Christmas 2025 and New Year 2026 holidays, on Tuesday afternoon around 15.00 WIB.
"Suddenly the students gathered. They called their opponents. Not long after, more opponents came," said one of the residents of RT 02/RW 03 Bidara Cina, Abdullah (53) in Jatinegara, East Jakarta, Tuesday.
The incident was witnessed by local residents who sell helmets daily at the scene.
Abdullah said the brawl started when a group of students gathered in front of the alley and called on their opponents. He estimated that the number of students involved reached dozens of people. Some of them were seen carrying sharp weapons and blunt objects.
"Bring weapons, all kinds. Some make nimpuk, there are also chain buckles, motorcycle chains," he said.
According to him, the students were not residents of the area. After the clash broke out, the group moved to the direction of the Kampung Melayu Terminal.
He hopes that the security forces and the school will be more vigilant in preventing fights, especially since the new school year has just begun.
"If possible, don't wait for the brawl first. Children hang out during school hours so that they can be disciplined," he said.
Until now, there have been no reports of injured residents. However, the community asked that the area be given special attention because it is prone to student clashes.
"Hopefully, someone will take action. Yes, maybe from the police. Maybe there will be an operation. So, don't wait for a brawl. If you can, yes, my advice is, if it's school hours, there are children who hang out," said Abdullah.
Another resident, Abdul Hakim (72), revealed that fights between students in the area often occurred, especially during school hours.
"Usually they hang out at the warung, coffee, smoking. Later, if the opponent comes across, they start to shout and then fight. This has happened many times," said Abdul.
Abdul admitted that he was uneasy because the students involved were not local residents, while the surrounding community had to bear the impact.
"Of course we are worried. We also don't know who they are," said Abdul.
