JAKARTA - The East Jakarta City Government (Pemkot) through the Environment Service Division transported as much as 12 tons of garbage during the 2026 New Year's Eve celebration at various crowded locations.

"The total volume of garbage we collected was around 12 tons from several crowded points during the New Year's Eve celebration," said Head of the East Jakarta Environment Service Sub-Directorate Monang Sinaga, quoted by ANTARA, Friday, January 2.

The garbage was collected by the Environment Service Division (Sudin LH) of Jaktim from the evening of December 31, 2025 to January 1, 2026.

Monang said that the volume was mostly from public areas which became the location for residents to gather when celebrating the new year.

"Most of them are disposable food and beverage packaging left by visitors," said Monang.

To handle the waste, the LH Jaktim Sub-Director implemented an integrated sanitation standby operation by deploying 500 officers to carry out road sweeping, collection, and transportation of waste to processing facilities.

Of these, 100 officers were on standby in the Velodrome Rawamangun area as a city-level activity center and another 100 officers at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), Cipayung.

Then, 300 officers were deployed to eight other sub-districts in East Jakarta, including at a number of crowded points, such as Taman Graha Cijantung, Flyover Pasar Rebo-Ciracas, BKT (East Canal Flood) Jatinegara and Duren Sawit areas, Flyover Pondok Kopi, to Old Shanghai Cakung.

Furthermore, Monang said that his party also deployed fleet support to facilitate the operation process in the field in the form of compactor trucks, road sweepers, mini dump trucks, cross cars, as well as toilet buses and other supporting facilities.

According to him, the 12-ton waste volume reflects the high mobility of residents during the New Year's Eve celebration, as well as an important record in the management of mass activities waste.

"Officers immediately moved after the activity was completed so that the public area could be cleaned up in the morning," said Monang.

He also reminded that waste problems are not only the responsibility of the government.

Changes in people's behavior are also considered to have a significant impact on the reduction of garbage in public spaces.

"We appeal to residents to be more environmentally aware, at least to throw away their garbage in the right place or reduce the use of disposable plastic when attending crowded events," said Monang.

On the other hand, the East Jakarta LH Sub-Director emphasized his commitment to continue strengthening the waste management system, both through fleet readiness and public education so that community celebrations do not leave a lasting environmental impact.
