Imipas prepares a new prison in Nusakambangan with a capacity of 1,500 people

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Immigration and Correction (Imipas) is preparing a new correctional institution (lapas) with super maximum security level in Nusakambangan, Central Java, with a capacity of 1,500 people.

Minister of Imipas Agus Andrianto said the new prison to accommodate high-risk inmates was named Kumbang Prison. Currently, the construction progress is in the final stage and is targeted to be completed in the near future.

"We are still completing the construction of 1,500 more rooms for super maximum security. It is being completed. Hopefully this year it will be completed," said Agus as reported by ANTARA, Monday, December 29.

He emphasized that the Ministry of Imipas through the Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas) is committed to continuously transferring high-risk inmates to Nusakambangan.

The high-risk inmates include inmates who were caught being part of the narcotics trade from inside the prison or detention house (rutan). Inmates who are fraudsters also fall into this category.

"If they still do that, yes, we will continue to take action, including employees who deviate," emphasized Agus.

Agus explained that in 2025, the Directorate General of Prisons had transferred as many as 1,882 high-risk inmates to Nusakambangan. He believes that this step can reduce inmates who violate the rules.

"Hopefully this will reduce. I believe this has also been greatly reduced," he said.

Previously, Director General of Corrections Mashudi said that the transfer of high-risk inmates to Nusakambangan, one of which, was aimed at eliminating security and order disturbances.

Mashudi said this step was also a form of implementation of guidance and security in accordance with the level of risk of the inmates.

"We hope that this effort can have a major impact on improving security and order in prisons and detention centers, especially narcotics and handphones, as always reminded by the Minister of Immigration and Correction Agus Andrianto," he said.
