Maluku Police Chase a Group of People Carrying a Knife Who Attacked 10 People at UIN Ambon

JAKARTA - The Maluku Regional Police (Polda) will take firm action against perpetrators of fights in the area of the State Islamic University (UIN) Ambon, especially those who are caught carrying sharp weapons (sajam) and are suspected of being used in violent acts.

"We will act firmly against anyone who is caught with a sharp weapon and is suspected of being used for fighting. Forceful efforts will be made to maintain public order and security," said Maluku Regional Police Chief Brig. Gen. Pol Imam Thobroni, in Ambon, Saturday, quoted by Antara.

The confirmation was conveyed after a meeting with other elements of the regional leadership communication forum (Forkopimda), responding to the clashes that occurred at UIN Ambon on Friday, December 26, 2025.

In the meeting, Maluku Governor Hendrik Lewerissa, Deputy Governor of Maluku, Kasdam XV/Pattimura, Danrem 151/Binaiya, Kabinda Maluku, the Main Officials of the Maluku Police, the Mayor of Ambon, the Police Chief of Ambon, Dandim 1504/Ambon, the Head of the Maluku Provincial MUI, the Regent of East Seram (SBT), and representatives of SBT community leaders in Ambon City.

The Maluku Regional Police Chief explained that the security of the clash was carried out by the police personnel assisted by the TNI. A total of 300 personnel have been deployed to the scene to prevent further clashes.

"We are assisted by TNI colleagues who are always ready to provide support. We continue to take steps to anticipate so that the situation remains under control," he explained.

Meanwhile, the Governor of Maluku, Hendrik Lewerissa, said the local government did not stand idly by in the face of the clashes that had occurred again around the UIN Ambon Campus.

The government together with the TNI and Polri has agreed to take concrete steps to mitigate and resolve the problem.

"Currently we are together with the Police Chief, the Head of the Police, and all elements of the Forkopimda have taken steps so that this problem can be immediately completed safely," he said.

He assessed that the clashes in the area were a recurring event that required serious and thorough handling. The governor also appreciated the police who continued to carry out security to provide a sense of security to the community.

To the public, the Governor appealed not to be easily provoked by information that is not clear about its truth and does not give room for parties who want to complicate the situation of security and public order (kamtibmas) in Ambon City.

"Let's maintain brotherhood, tolerance among fellow Maluku children, and together create a conducive kamtibmas situation," he said.

The public is also asked to play an active role in maintaining the security of their respective environments, one of which is by installing surveillance cameras (CCTV) independently.

According to the Governor, CCTV footage can help the police move quickly in enforcing the law if there is a security disturbance.

As a result of the clash, 10 people were recorded as injured. Currently, the Maluku Police is still investigating to uncover the causes and parties involved.
