JAKARTA - The Banda Aceh City Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkompinda) issued a joint appeal banning the celebration of the upcoming New Year's Eve.

"We appeal to the people of Banda Aceh not to celebrate the new year, let's increase worship, introspection (self-reflection), and pray that the new year will bring good," said Banda Aceh Mayor Illiza Sa'aduddin Djamal, in Banda Aceh, Friday.

The appeal was made after the joint signing of the Banda Aceh Forkopimda at a joint coordination meeting in the context of security ahead of Christmas and New Year (Nataru) 2026, in Banda Aceh.

In the appeal, the people who are in the capital of Aceh Province are asked not to celebrate the New Year's Eve on January 1, 2026 with fireworks, mercon, or firecrackers, blowing trumpets, vehicle races and others both in open and closed places.

"It is not allowed to carry out other hura-hura activities that cause mass crowds, are not useful and are contrary to Islamic law and Acehnese customs," he said.

Then, to traders, it is prohibited to trade petasan, mercon, trumpet fireworks or the like. All of this, in order to create order and tranquility in the community.

On the other hand, he asked the public to strengthen unity and unity as well as religious harmony, increase concern in upholding Islamic law, respect and help each other for the sake of achieving order and security.

Illiza said that although most Banda Aceh residents did not celebrate Christmas and New Year, the government together with Forkopimda would still carry out security during the New Year.

"We will continue to provide security to create a conducive atmosphere and avoid unwanted things," said IIliza Sa'aduddin Djamal.
