JAKARTA - A US nuclear-powered submarine arrived at a major naval base in the southeastern South Korean city of Busan on Tuesday to replenish supplies and give the crew a rest, the South Korean Navy said.

The Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Greeneville (SSSN-772), entered the naval base in Busan, about 330 kilometers southeast of Seoul, the Navy said.

"The Navy plans to increase exchanges and cooperation between the South Korean and US navies and strengthen our joint defense posture on the occasion of the arrival of the USS Greeneville," the South Korean Navy said, launching Kyodo News (23/12).

USS Greeneville last visited South Korea in 2016. With today's arrival, the ship has made four visits to the Land of Ginseng.

Tuesday's arrival marked the first visit by a US nuclear-powered submarine to South Korea since President Lee Jae Myung took office in June.

His arrival comes about 10 months after the USS Alexandria (SSN-757) Los Angeles-class submarine docked at the same naval base for a similar purpose in February.

Separately, North Korea was furious with the move, accusing Washington of ignoring Pyongyang's security concerns and warning it was ready to use all means to defend its national security.
