Lumajang - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Lumajang appeals to residents and sand miners to be aware of the millions of cubic meters of Mount Semeru material that falls at any time during an eruption and heavy rain.

"There are millions of cubic meters of Semeru volcanic material that are a potential danger for residents, so we appeal to the public and miners to comply with the instructions from the officers," said the Head of the Lumajang BPBD, Isnugroho, as reported by ANTARA, Monday, December 22.

Mount Semeru has a volcanic and strombolian type eruption with the characteristics of an explosive eruption that occurs several times in an hour. Eruptions usually occur from the Jonggring Seloko crater, which is located on the southeast side of the Mahameru peak.

"We continue to monitor the activity of Mount Semeru through coordination with the Mount Semeru Observation Post officers in Sumberwuluh Village, Candipuro District," he said.

Every night, according to Isnugroho, it is seen that the glowing lava lights down from the peak of Semeru (Mahameru) and this condition indicates that the pressure under the magma is shallow.

"The status of Mount Semeru is still at level III or Alert, so I appeal to the public and sand miners to comply with the recommendations of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG)," he said.

The public and miners must not carry out any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 km from the peak (center of the eruption).

Outside this distance, the public should not carry out activities at a distance of 500 meters from the river bank (river border) along Besuk Kobokan because they have the potential to be hit by the expansion of the hot cloud and lava flow up to a distance of 17 km from the peak.

"The public is also prohibited from carrying out activities within a radius of 5 km from the crater/peak of Mount Semeru because they are prone to the danger of stone throwing (pijar)," he said.

Isnugroho also asked the public to be aware of the potential for hot clouds, lava discharge, and lahar along the river/valley flows upstream of the Semeru Volcano peak, especially along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat, as well as the potential for lahar in small rivers which are tributaries of Besuk Kobokan.

In addition, BMKG also released extreme weather in East Java from December 21 to December 31, 2025 in several regencies/cities, including in Lumajang Regency, so that people around the riverbanks must be alert to the cold lava flood of Semeru.

"The potential for extreme weather is the impact of the active Asian monsoon and the presence of a tropical cyclone 93S in the Indian Ocean south of West Java, which also has an impact on East Java," he said.
