JAKARTA - The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russia was preparing contacts with the United States to obtain details of talks with European powers and Kyiv on a possible peaceful settlement to end the Ukraine conflict.
Politico reported that US and Russian officials are expected to meet in Miami over the weekend, and the Russian delegation will include Russian President Vladimir Putin's investment envoy, Kirill Dmitriev.
When asked about media reports on the meeting in Miami, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that contacts had been planned with the Uncle Sam's country.
"We are indeed preparing certain contacts with our American colleagues to receive information about the results of the work that America has done with Europe and with Ukraine," Peskov said, launching Al Arabiya from Reuters (18/12).
Washington has held talks with Moscow, and separately with Kyiv and European leaders, on proposals to end the war in Ukraine but no agreement has been reached.
President Putin said on Wednesday that Russia would seize more territory in Ukraine by force if Kyiv and European politicians did not engage in a US proposal for a peace settlement.
European leaders have said they support Kyiv and if Russia wins in Ukraine, then Moscow will one day attack NATO members.
The Kremlin itself has repeatedly dismissed claims that Russia would attack NATO members as nonsense.
So far, Russia controls 19.2 percent of Ukrainian territory, including the annexed Crimean peninsula in 2014, as well as most of the eastern Donbas region, most of the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions and small parts of four other regions.
