JAKARTA - Three Thai civilians died as a result of the ongoing fierce fighting along the country's border with Cambodia.
The latest large-scale fighting was sparked by clashes on Sunday that injured two Thai soldiers and thwarted a ceasefire driven by US President Donald Trump which ended five days of fighting in July over long-running territorial disputes.
More than 20 people were reportedly killed in the latest fighting, while hundreds of thousands of people took refuge on both sides of the border and were moved to temporary shelters or living with relatives.
The Thai Army said Cambodia on Wednesday night launched an attack with artillery and mortar against Thailand's position, which was met with the same type of heavy weapon, causing damage including "an enemy truck destruction."
Cambodia's online news site Fresh News reported the artillery shootout was continuing on Thursday morning.
The fighting drew international attention, including from Pope Leo XIV, who told an audience at the Vatican he was "deeply saddened to hear news of the recurrence of conflict."
"There were casualties, including among civilians, and thousands of people were forced to leave their homes. I express my sympathy in prayer to this beloved people," he said.
