JAKARTA - Honduran President Xiomara Castro declared the results of the presidential election held on November 30 invalid, referring to the alleged manipulation of the vote counting system and what he called an "electoral coup".
"This is our constitutional mandate that cannot be canceled. Therefore, I argue that this election, based on evidence of 26 audio recordings, is invalid. Democracy will not exist without justice," Castro said in a speech broadcast by Canal 11 quoted via Sputnik, Wednesday, December 10.
Castro emphasized that the people of Honduras should not accept elections that are 'colored by interference, manipulation, and extortion'. He added that sovereignty is not for sale and democracy is not for submission'.
He also accused the existence of manipulation in the Initial Election Result Transmission System (TREP), which according to him distorts the will of the people.
"This action is an ongoing electoral coup, which we will report to the United Nations, the European Union, CLAC, OAS, and other international organizations," he said.
Meanwhile, the National Election Council said that after more than 99 percent of the votes were counted, the candidate from the National Party backed by US President Donald Trump, Nasry Asfura, won with 40.53 percent of the vote.
