Israel Is Responsible For 43 Percent Of Journalists' Deaths Worldwide By 2025

JAKARTA - The Israeli army is responsible for nearly half of the deaths of journalists worldwide by 2025, a report showed on Tuesday.

According to Reporters Without Borders, Paris-based international NGOs defending journalists' rights, by 2025 have seen a surge in the number of journalists killed worldwide.

The report shows 67 professional media killed in one year, and at least 53 of them are victims of "military group criminal practices and organized crimes."

"Almost half (43 percent) of journalists killed in the last 12 months were killed in Gaza by the Israeli armed forces," the report said.

About 220 journalists have been killed by Israeli soldiers since October 2023, 65 of whom have been targeted because of their profession or while working, he added.

According to data from the Gaza Government Media Office, at least 257 Palestinian journalists have been killed by Israeli soldiers in Gaza since the start of the genocide war.

Israel ranks second in the number of detainees of foreign journalists, according to the report, with 20 Palestinian journalists jailed by 2025, alongside 16 people arrested in Gaza and the occupied West Bank over the past two years.

The report declared Mexico the "second most dangerous country in the world to journalists," with nine people killed, and China hosting "the world's largest journalist prison", which detained 121 reporters.

Journalists face higher risks in their own country, the organization said, as all professionals killed, except for two, were killed while carrying out their duties in their home country.

"In Sudan, journalists are facing serious harassment as the conflict continues to raging," the report said, noting paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) killed four journalists by 2025, including two kidnapped by rebel groups.

As many as 37 of 135 journalists are currently missing in Syria, missing during the government of President Bashar al-Assad who was ousted after being jailed by regime authorities or held hostage by ISIS (Daesh), according to the report.

Separately, medical sources confirmed on Tuesday that the Palestinian death toll from Israeli aggression in Gaza since October 7, 2023 has reached 70,366, the majority of women and children, while the injured toll reached 171,064, quoted from WAFA.

Meanwhile, since the ceasefire took effect in October, the death toll of Palestine has reached 377 people, while 987 others were injured.
