TANGERANG The Tangerang District Health Office (Dinkes), Banten, reported that 48,815 residents in the area had diabetes mellitus, dominated by age groups over 40 years old.
The head of the Tangerang District Health Office, Hendra Tarmizi, said that out of the total cases, 60 deaths this year were recorded.
"On average, people with diabetes are mostly over 40 years old," he said in Tangerang, Tuesday, December 9.
He explained that the number of diabetes cases in 2025 increased by 494 cases compared to the previous year which reached 48,321 cases, with 32 deaths in 2024.
"Of the total cases, 70 percent of them are individuals with vulnerable ages," he said.
According to Hendra, the factors that cause diabetes are mostly triggered by descendants and unhealthy lifestyles, such as consumption of food and high sugar drinks, lack of movement, and alcohol consumption.
"So there's not much movement, eating too much sweet, including alcohol consumption can also cause diabetes because the sugar content is high," he said.
He added that diabetes is one of the most prone to non-communicable diseases that causes serious complications.
"The first combination can be a stroke, then a heart attack, blindness due to damaged eye nerves, and injuries that do not heal," he said.
Therefore, the Health Office urges the public to live a consistent healthy lifestyle and routinely carry out health checks.
