Two humanitarian volunteers reportedly died and several others were injured while delivering clean water assistance for flood victims in East Aceh Regency.

East Aceh Police Chief AKBP Irwan Kurniadi in East Aceh, Monday, said the accident occurred in Buket Rinyen Kameng, Gampong Pantee Labu, Pantee Bidari District, East Aceh Regency, on Sunday 7 December at around 17.30 WIB.

"The accident occurred allegedly due to the brakes not working or a failure. The accident caused two deaths and five others were injured," said Police Chief Irwan Kurniadi, quoted by Antara.

The victims who died were Rizwan (38) and Dian (30), both residents of Gampong Beurandang, Nurussalam District, East Aceh Regency.

Meanwhile, the other five victims who suffered serious injuries were Abdullah (43), Intention (59), Zainadi (47), Bakri Umar (21), and Jamaluddin (22). The five are residents of Nurussalam, East Aceh Regency.

The victims were a group of Chairman of the East Aceh Regency House of Representatives (DPRK), Musitir, who delivered clean water assistance to flood victims.

The police chief said the accident began with a pickup truck carrying two reservoirs containing clean water and food assistance to Buket Rinyen Kameng, Gampong Committee Labu, Pantee Bidari District, East Aceh Regency.

When the car was driven, Bakri drove on the descent road, the braking function or brakes failed. As a result, the driver was unable to control the vehicle so he fell into the ditch on the left.

"The incident caused two people to die at the scene. Meanwhile, the seriously injured victims were evacuated to the Zubir Mahmud Regional General Hospital (RSUD) in Idi, the capital of East Aceh Regency," said Irwan Kurniadi.

The police chief appealed to volunteers and residents who delivered humanitarian assistance for flood victims to continue to prioritize safety on trips, given the condition of roads that are still vulnerable and the weather that has not fully improved.

"We also hope that the volunteers will continue to comply with traffic rules, do not force travel when conditions are tired, and ensure that vehicles are in good condition before leaving with assistance," said Police Chief Irwan Kurniadi.
