Xi Jinping Supports European Efforts For Ukraine, But China Has Its Own Way

JAKARTA - Chinese President Xi Jinping said he supports Europe's efforts to find a solution in the Ukraine conflict, but China has its own way of solving the problem.

"President Xi Jinping said China supports all efforts conducive to peace in the Ukraine crisis and will continue to play a constructive role in the crisis's political settlement in its own way," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told a news conference in Beijing, Friday, December 5.

French President Emmanuel Macron met President Xi Jinping in Beijing, Thursday (4/12). One of the agendas of his second meeting was Macron asking China to join the ongoing ceasefire efforts between Moscow and Kiev.

"China supports European countries in playing their proper role in the formation of a balanced, effective, and sustainable European security architecture," added Lin Jian.

At the same time, China firmly opposes any irresponsible attempts to divert faults or defame others.

In a joint press statement, Macron said the two countries "completely understand the seriousness" of the situation in Ukraine and the need to achieve lasting peace, he hopes they can strengthen cooperation in that regard.

As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, France and China, according to Macron has a special responsibility and he also believes the two countries must do everything they can to ensure the achievement of compromise, as well as maintain international law and ensure long-term stability.

Macron also praised their dialogue builds on "trust" and "false understanding" in a highly erratic international context marked by the crisis."

Macron and Xi on Friday (5/12) departed for Chengdu in southwest China. Xi will host Macron in a one-on-one talk in Chengdu, with an agenda likely to discuss bilateral relations, trade, and US tariffs, as well as war in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip.

Accompanied by business leaders and government officials, Macron's visit to China this time became the fourth state trip to China.

Macron also held talks with Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) Zhao Leji.

The two countries are said to be expanding economic and trade cooperation to more areas and increasing resilience. In the first 10 months of 2024, bilateral trade between the two countries has reached 68.75 billion US dollars while two-way investments have cumulatively exceeded 27 billion US dollars.
