JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of Commission V DPR RI, Andi Iwan Darmawan Aras, asked the government to strengthen mitigation and preparedness for potential natural disasters that are predicted to increase by the end of the year.
This warning was conveyed following an early warning from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) regarding extreme weather in various parts of Indonesia.
"Intensification of Asian monsoons, global atmospheric anomalies, and the potential birth of tropical cyclone seeds make December 2025 the period with the highest hydrometeorological risk in recent years," Iwan told reporters, Antara, Friday, December 5.
According to him, BMKG has identified increasingly dominant disaster patterns, such as extreme rain, strong winds, lightning, tornadoes, and disruption of visibility. West Java is said to be the most vulnerable region, followed by Central Java and East Java.
"These are three densely populated areas that are the center of mobility on long holidays. So all parties, including the community, must increase vigilance," he said.
Iwan assessed that the BMKG warning was not just a technical alarm, but a signal regarding the state's readiness to face repeated disaster threats which are now increasingly extreme.
He reminded that natural disasters continue to occur in various regions, such as flash floods in Cilacap, landslides in Banjarnegara, to major disasters in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
"These disasters are enough to be a lesson that disasters no longer have 'seasons'," he said.
For this reason, he encouraged the central and regional governments to translate BMKG's predictions and early warnings in the form of concrete actions. He asked regions that had been given warnings not to delay anticipatory steps.
"Including preparations for evacuating residents, early evacuation, tightening activities in the red zone, strengthening logistics before the disaster arrives, as well as massive and easily accessible public information support," he said.
In a vulnerable situation like now, said Iwan, preparedness is not just a technical ability, but the courage to make quick decisions even though it is not popular.
Iwan also asked people living in vulnerable areas to increase their vigilance and prioritize safety.
