JAKARTA - MPR Chairman Ahmad Muzani explained the reason why President Prabowo Subianto had not declared a national disaster emergency status related to the large floods that hit a number of areas in Sumatra.
Muzani, after attending a tea banquet with the President at the Presidential Palace complex, Jakarta, said that the government assessed that the situation on the ground could still be controlled through coordination with local governments.
"The government can control the situation and conditions as soon as possible, and is currently being carried out together with district, city and provincial governments in their respective environments," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, December 2.
Muzani said the current handling efforts were effective thanks to the synergy between the central government and provincial, district and city governments in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
The President continues to coordinate the recovery with ministers and leaders of related institutions, including the deployment of the President Director of PLN and Pertamina to accelerate the recovery of electricity networks and the availability of fuel in disaster areas.
"Everything is directed so that conditions return to normal as soon as possible," said Muzani.
He said the government could control the situation and situation as soon as possible, and is currently being carried out together with local governments.
Responding to the pressure of a number of people who pushed for an increase in status to become a national disaster, Muzani emphasized that the decision was entirely in the hands of the President.
The determination of the national emergency status, he said, requires the birth of a Presidential Decree (Keppres) and of course based on careful consideration.
"The president has certain considerations. That is the authority of the President because the decision must be made in the form of Presidential Decree," he said.
Muzani did not specify the considerations in question, but stated that the government is currently continuing to mobilize all its resources and efforts to accelerate recovery in the affected areas, while ensuring that all community needs can be handled.
