JAKARTA - The United Nations has called for full compliance with international law for the security of international civil aviation following the US announcement that Venezuela's airspace will be "completely closed."
As reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, the call comes after US President Donald Trump recently threatened on social media to "fully close up" Venezuela's airspace, prompting Carcas to demand "unconditional respect" for its airspace.
However, the United Nations remains the same amid rising tensions between the two countries, UN secretary-general spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters.
He urged hostile countries to respect their obligations to international law, including the UN Charter and all applicable legal frameworks and use existing mechanisms to address issues peacefully in order to ensure the safety, security, and connectivity of international civil aviation."
Responding to a report on The Washington Post stating Defense Minister Pete Hegseth ordered an attack on a ship suspected of carrying drugs, Dujarric said Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was "mainly very concerned" about the matter.
Dujarric also referred to a statement by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, who had previously indicated the military attack may violate international human rights laws and has called for an investigation into the attack.
The White House confirmed on Monday that Hegseth had authorized the order on September 2, but an attack order was issued by Navy Admiral Frank Bradley, who spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt had worked "well in accordance with her authority and according to the law" in directing the deadly attack.
The US has expanded military operations across Latin America in recent months, deploying Marines, warships, fighter jets, bombers, submarines and drones.
Last week, Trump said the US would "immediately" take action against Venezuelan drug dealers on land.
Since September, the US military has launched 21 attacks on ships it claims carried drug cargo, killing 83 people.
