Education and transportation in Papua Mountains has caught the attention of the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago. (IST)

PAPUA MOUNTAINS - The Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs (Menko Polkam) of the Republic of Indonesia, General (Ret.) Djamari Chaniago, paid a working visit to the Papua Mountains on Tuesday (2/12/2025), focusing on two main issues: education and transport access. He arrived at Wamena Airport in the morning and was immediately welcomed with a traditional dance and a noken necklace by Governor John Tabo.

During the visit, Menko Polkam Djamari Chaniago was accompanied by the Head of BIN, a number of deputies from Kemenko Polkam, and special staff. He emphasised that this visit carried a special message from President Prabowo Subianto to the people of Papua Pegunungan.

"We bring President Prabowo's warm regards. I am also gathering information directly here to take back to Jakarta for consideration," said Djamari.

One of the aspirations expressed by the community was the presence of a university in the Papua Highlands. They hope that Cenderawasih University will open a campus in the region so that access to higher education is no longer limited.

The second issue is the urgent need for land routes. Until now, the mobility of people and goods in Wamena and the surrounding area has been entirely dependent on air transport. Djamari emphasised that the government has actually been working hard to open up land connectivity.

The 700-kilometre Jayapura–Wamena route now has only 50 kilometres left before it is fully connected. "This is one of the efforts to open up land access. I will discuss this with the Minister of Public Works," said Djamari.
