JAKARTA - Queen Maxima from the Kingdom of the Netherlands gave a special appreciation for the innovation of PT Bank Tabungan Negara (Persero) Tbk (BTN) which allows people to reduce Home Ownership Loan (KPR) installments by exchanging household waste.
This was conveyed by Queen Maxim when directly inspecting the BTN residential area, at the Gran Harmoni Cibitung Housing, Bekasi, West Java.
Queen Maxima visited in her capacity as a Special Advocate for the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UNSGSA).
"The program entitled 'Bayar Ansuran-Mu Using Mu Waste' is considered a green financial inclusion breakthrough that is able to strengthen the economic resilience of low-income families (MBR), as well as reduce the burden on national waste at the smallest community unit level," said BTN President Director Nixon LP Napitupulu in his statement in Jakarta, Antara, Thursday, November 27.
Nixon said the program was one of the points seen by Ratu Maxima during her visit to Indonesia as a form of active role for BTN in the fields of good environment, social, and governance (ESG).
"From the ESG side, this is the second year that we are very active in encouraging the ESG project with household waste collected and converted into rupiah, then into savings to reduce installments which can reach 10-15 percent per month. So, if the installment is around Rp. 1.1-1.2 million per month, customers can save from household waste of around Rp. 100,000-200 thousand per month. This also helps the country, earth, and the environment to be cleaner and greener," he said again.
Nixon continued, the Indonesian family was able to produce up to four kilograms of garbage per day on average.
"Sampah yang selama ini dianggap beban ternyata punya nilai ekonomi. Melalui program ini, sampah dipimlah, diberimbangkan, dan dikonversi menjadi tabungan untuk mengurangi ancaman rumah. Semakin berkisar, semakin ringan antal mereka," ujar Nixon.
Meanwhile, the 'Bayar Ansuran-Mu Using Your Waste' program has been implemented in several locations. Until the end of 2026, BTN is targeting to implement the program at 100 points on the island of Java.
In addition, Ratu Maxima also visited a low-emission house financed with the Subsidized Home Ownership Credit (KPR) scheme. Ratu Maxima held a dialogue with BTN Subsidy KPR debtors, namely Mursidi who works as a porridge maker; Aisyah who has a career as a health worker, and Fahrudin, a worker at the workshop.
He also directly inspected the mass contracts of KPR Subsidies for various groups of workers, including informal workers such as taxi drivers and used goods entrepreneurs.
Nixon continued, the development of low-emission housing financing BTN has a long-term roadmap. BTN targets the construction of 150 thousand low-emission housing units by 2029.
For the initial stage, BTN is running a pilot project involving eight developers with a total of 1,317 housing units that have been built and marketed.
"In stages, there will be 150 thousand houses with 30 percent of the portion of the use of eco-friendly materials financed by BTN until 2029," said Nixon as well.
Director of Risk Management BTN Setiyo Wibowo explained the importance of financial health for debtors. According to him, the ability to manage finances will greatly determine the survival of customers after having a home loan (KPR).
"BTN encourages debtors to maintain the ability to save. They must have emergency funds to deal with unexpected needs," said Setiyo.
He gave an example of three customers met by Ratu Maxima, namely sellers of porridge, nurses, and factory employees. From these interactions, Ratu observed the importance of financial health for customers, for helping them to save and manage finances better.
Setiyo explained, BTN has a savings education program with a monthly savings product with an autodemic system to make it easier for customers to set aside emergency funds consistently. Including, the initiative that is currently being encouraged is to save by utilizing household waste through the 'Pay Your installments to Use Your Waste' program.
Waste collected and sorted, especially types that have economic value, can be exchanged through a Recosystem into savings balances at BTN. This program not only encourages saving habits, but also helps ease mortgage installments.
"From waste, it can be used as savings. The value of waste deposited by housewives can go into savings and help reduce installments by around 10-15 percent," said Setiyo as well.
Director of Consumer Banking BTN Hirwandi Gafar said Queen Maxima's visit paid great attention to the sustainability of housing financing in Indonesia.
According to him, financial literacy is a challenge that must continue to be answered by BTN with more intensive education to the community.

Hirwandi views that education does not only stop at owning a house. But also on the ability of the community to manage finances afterward, especially maintaining the habit of saving.
"Saving is for the financing of installments for homes, children's education, as well as emergency funding or emergency funds," said Hirwandi.
