JAKARTA - Maintaining the presence of observers from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at PLTN Zaporizhia following the possibility of a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine is an absolute requirement to ensure nuclear safety, said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
"(The electricity between Russia and Ukraine) is divided, not divided - and I don't want to talk about it because it's political - it's something that Ukraine and Russia will decide one day," Grossi said in an interview with Reuters. November 26.
"But one thing that is clear, the IAEA is very much needed in this situation," he said.
Last week, Grossi warned in a routine session of the IAEA Board of Governors that fighting in Ukraine poses a major risk to global nuclear safety.
He also emphasized the importance of finding long-term solutions to cool the water used at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (PLTN).
It is known, PLTN Zaporizhia is located on the edge of the Kakhovka Reservoir in Energodar. This PLTN is the largest PLTN in Europe, with six units of power capable of producing a combined electricity of 6 GW. The PLTN is currently in a cold stopping mode and does not supply any electricity.
