JAKARTA - The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Monday condemned the Israeli assassination of the Hezbollah military commander, pledging a "firm response" in retaliation.

Haytham Ali Tabatabai was killed in an Israeli attack on Beirut's southern suburbs on Sunday. In a statement broadcast by state media, the IRGC said it "condolences on this barbaric crime," adding Hezbollah and all Iran's "resistance sports" and Tehran-backed armed group networks were entitled to take revenge for Tabatabai, according to Al Arabiya November 25.

The IRGC warned Israel would face "strict responses" at the time they voted for.

Tabatabai is the most senior Hezbollah commander killed by Israel since the start of the November 2024 ceasefire, which aims to end hostilities for more than a year.

Earlier on Monday, Iran's Foreign Ministry also criticized the attack, calling it a "significant violation of the November 2024 ceasefire and a brutal violation of Lebanon's national sovereignty."

Israel has repeatedly launched attacks in Lebanon since the ceasefire, saying the attacks targeted Hezbollah fighters and military infrastructure.

Hezbollah, whose main supporter is Iran, has weakened significantly due to its latest confrontation with Israel and the fall of Bashar al-Assad in Syria, Tehran's main ally and Hezbollah.

This setback also had a direct impact on Iran, with its nuclear facilities being targeted by Israeli and US attacks during the 12-day war earlier this year.
