Sand mining activities in areas prone to the eruption of Mount Semeru, East Java will be temporarily closed to ensure the safety of mining workers and communities in the Semeru watershed (DAS).

"The safety of residents and mining workers is a top priority, so the local government will immediately issue an official letter of temporary closure of all mining activities in the vulnerable area of Mount Semeru," said Lumajang Regent Indah Amperawati, quoted from Antara, Thursday, November 20.

According to him, this step was taken following the increase in mountain activity which is still volatile and has the potential to pose a risk of danger, including hot clouds, landslides, and volcanic ash along with the status of Mount Semeru rising to level IV or alert since Wednesday (19/11/2025) at 17.00 WIB.

"Human safety is far more important than production. All mining activities are temporarily suspended until the situation is completely safe," he said.

Indah has coordinated with the Lumajang Police Chief and the joint apparatus to ensure the implementation of the closure is effective.

"Strict instructions have also been conveyed so that no mining activities will continue as long as the vulnerable status is still in effect," he said.

The official letter of appeal for the closure of the mining will soon be distributed to all mining managers in the affected areas. The government emphasizes that this step is temporary, proactive, and fully to protect the safety of citizens.

"In addition, intensive supervision at strategic points will be carried out by joint forces to ensure compliance with the temporary ban," he said.

Indah invites all parties to understand the conditions and work together for the sake of mutual safety, so that all parties comply with the appeal and safety must be the main consideration of every step in the disaster-prone zone.
