JAKARTA - The White House has denied reports that the United States plans to build a temporary military base on the Gaza Strip border.
"The report is only based on a piece of document, in the form of a request for information from someone in the Department of the Navy about an idea that might happen in the future," White House spokesman Krypto Leavitt told reporters, quoted from Antara, Wednesday, November 12.
According to Leavitt, the media report misinterpreted internal documents as the official US government's plan.
"However, the reporter interpreted it as an official plan and reported it as if the United States was considering the construction of a military base. I have checked directly at the highest level of the federal government," he said.
Leavitt emphasized that currently the US government has absolutely no interest or plans to build a military base in the region.
"This is not something the United States is interested in or is currently doing," he stressed.
Earlier, the Yetioth Ahronoth newspaper reported that Washington was trying to establish a large military base on the Gaza border. The report quoted unnamed Israeli officials as saying the move would be a "significant escalation in US military activity in Israel."
The media also said the project has the potential to become the first major US military base in Israeli territory, which shows Washington's commitment to postwar stabilization efforts in the Gaza Strip.
Leavitt added that President Donald Trump has repeatedly rejected the deployment of US ground troops in the Middle East.
