JAKARTA - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday Germany had sent Patriot's air defense system to Ukraine in fulfillment of previous agreements.

"We have strengthened the 'Patriot' component of our Ukrainian air defense," President Zelensky wrote on social media quoted from The Kyiv Independent Nov. 3.

"I thank Germany and personally to Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz for this joint step to protect human lives from Russian terror. For some time, we have prepared to strengthen our air defenses, and now the agreement reached has been implemented," he continued.

The announcement comes more than a month after German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said Berlin would supply Ukraine with two Patriot systems by the end of 2025.

Russian airstrikes against Ukraine have increased in scope and intensity since spring of 2025. The current Kremlin campaign against energy infrastructure ahead of winter has increased further at stake, leading to frequent large-scale power outages.

"Russian airstrikes are the main bet (President of Russia Vladimir) Putin in this war through terror, he is trying to compensate for his inability to achieve his crazy goal on the ground," President Zelensky said.

"Therefore, every strengthening of our air defenses literally brings us closer to the end of the war we all look forward to," he said.

The United States-made Patriot air defense system is also called a battery consisting of radar units for target detection and tracking, firing control centers, missile launchers, and supporting equipment such as power supply and communication systems.

Depending on its configuration, the typical battery covers between four and eight launchers, capable of firing multiple missiles designed to intercept ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as aircraft.

A state-of-the-art air defense system like Patriots is still rare in the world, with some components taking years to produce.

Germany has previously supplied three Patriot systems to Ukraine. Additional batteries have been provided under an agreement with US manufacturers to immediately replenish German stock.

The deal comes after US President Donald Trump in July announced the establishment of a PURL (Ukraine Priority Requirement List) program, a NATO and EU-backed initiative in which alliance members will purchase US-made weapons systems for Ukraine.

President Zelensky said there would be "further results" regarding Ukraine's air defenses and that additional deals were underway.
