JAKARTA - The Turkish court sentenced 11 defendants to life imprisonment in a fire case that killed 78 people at a ski resort in the mountains of Bolu, Turkey, in January.

Halit Ergul, owner of the Grand Kartal Hotel where the fire broke out, was among 11 defendants who were sentenced to life imprisonment with a sentence that was heavier by courts in Bolu Province, according to state broadcaster TRT Haber.

A total of 34 children were among the victims who died in the fire, which occurred during the school holidays when many families from Istanbul and Ankara headed to the Bolu mountains to play skiing. It was recorded that 137 other people were injured.

"There were a total of 32 defendants in the trial, 20 of whom were in pretrial detention," the TRT said.

Apart from Ergul, the defendants included members of the hotel council, managers and staff, as well as a deputy mayor and firefighters.

The deadly fire sparked calls for accountability and reform. Independent experts say that the hotel at the Kartalkaya ski resort does not have basic fire safety measures.

The fire started on the floor of a 12-story restaurant, where 238 guests were staying. The fire forced panicked hotel guests to jump out the window in the middle of the night.
