Three Times Failed, Fujimori's Death Is Back In The Peruvian Presidential Election

JAKARTA - On Thursday Fujimori announced his re-nomination in the Peru presidential election which will be held in April.

The announcement came days after the Peruvian Constitutional Court canceled the money laundering case that ensnared him.

"I would like to announce my decision to run for president of this republic," he said at the Popular Force, citing Barron's from AFP Oct. 31.

The daughter of the late former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori previously nominated for three final Peruvian presidential elections, and has always ended up runner-up.

His last nomination was in 2021, when he was defeated by Pedro Castillo from the left wing, who was later impeached and arrested at the end of 2022 after seeking to dissolve Congress.

Previously, Fujimori lost the 2016 election to right-right-right economist Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, after losing the 2011 election to retired military officer Ollanta Humala.

This will be Fujimori's first campaign since his father passed away in September 2024, months after being released from prison with humanitarian clemency. He has served 16 years from 25 years in prison for human rights abuses during his reign for the 1990-2000 period.

Peru's Constitutional Court last week canceled an investigation into Fujimori's alleged illegal campaign funding in 2011 and 2016, deciding that money laundering charges had been added to Peru's criminal law in November 2016 and could not be implemented retroactively.

Fujimori spent nearly 17 months in pretrial detention during the investigation, according to the court.

In January, the court canceled the previous trial, returning the case to the investigation stage. Prosecutors demanded a sentence of 35 years in prison, on charges that Fujimori's party and colleagues received up to 17 million US dollars from various sources, including Brazilian company Odebrecht (now Novonor) and Peru financial parent company Credicorp.
