JAKARTA - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned Israel's recent airstrikes in the Gaza Strip that killed more than 100 Palestinians, mostly women and children, in heavy ceasefire violations.
"Secretary General strongly condemns the killing of civilians in Gaza as a result of yesterday's Israeli airstrikes, including many children," UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told a news conference.
He added that Secretary General Guterres also "threatened all actions that damaged the ceasefire and endangered the lives of civilians."
Stressing the importance of respecting ceasefire commitments, Secretary General Guterres stressed "this commitment must be fully enforced" and warned that "any action that risks endangering civilians or obstructing humanitarian operations should be avoided."
Furthermore, Dujarric praised the ongoing diplomatic efforts by Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the United States to defend the ceasefire, adding "PBB and its partners are rapidly increasing our presence in Gaza, working intensively to provide life-saving assistance to people in need."
This statement comes after the Palestinian Ministry of Health reported Israeli air and artillery strikes since Tuesday night had killed at least 110 people, including 46 children and 20 women, and injured 253 others, including 78 children and 84 women.
