JAKARTA - A tectonic earthquake measuring magnitude (M) 6.2 rocked the Savu Sea area, Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), on Monday, October 27 in the morning at around 00.04 WIB. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) ensured that this earthquake did not have the potential for a tsunami.

Based on BMKG analysis, the epicenter was at sea at coordinates 9.34 degrees south latitude and 123.95 degrees east longitude, about 71 kilometers northwest of South Central Timor, with a depth of 110 kilometers.

BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Director Daryono explained that this earthquake was a medium earthquake category triggered by the collision activity of the Indo-Australian plate with Eurasia. The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show a downward movement (normal fault).

"The shock of the earthquake was felt in the Maumere, Ende, Kefamenanu, Kupang, Waingapu, and Lembata areas with intensity III of the MMI IV, or felt clear inside the house," Daryono said in an official statement, Monday, October 27.

The results of the BMKG modeling ensured that this earthquake did not trigger a tsunami wave, but the public was advised to remain alert to potential aftershocks. As of 00.35 WIB, two follow-up activities with the largest magnitude 4.6 were recorded.

BMKG urges the public to remain calm, not to be influenced by irresponsible issues, and to check the condition of the building before returning to their respective homes.

Official information about earthquake developments can be accessed through BMKG channels such as @infoBMKG, bmkg.go.id sites, or InfoBMKG and WRS-BMKG applications on smartphones.
