Finding Hazardous Medical Waste In Attack Implementation, DLH Waits For Transportation Schedule

JAKARTA - The Environment Agency (DLH) of Serang City, Banten Province, conducted cross-sectoral coordination to take quick steps in handling piles of medical hazardous and toxic waste (B3) found near residential areas of Graha Walantaka Housing, Pengamlangan Village.

The head of the Serang City DLH, Farach Richi, said that he had carried out intensive coordination with various related parties to smooth the waste evacuation process.

The agencies involved include the Serang City Health Office, Serang District Health Office, Serang Regency DLH, Serang City Police, and licensed B3 waste transporters.

"We have coordinated with DLH to deal with B3 waste. And have coordinated with B3 waste transporters," he said in Serang, Sunday, as reported by Antara.

Although the disposal site containing tens of thousands of used medical devices such as syringes, infusion bags, dializer tubes, to bloodied medical fabrics has been fitted with seal and police lines, the existence of this waste has disturbed local residents, especially because of the pungent smell that appears when it rains.

Responding to these concerns, DLH promised that the transportation of waste would be carried out as soon as possible.

"God willing, as soon as possible, we are waiting for the schedule with the B3 waste transporter to be transported," he said.

Meanwhile, Walantaka sub-district head, Sholeh Muslim, said that he had checked the location, found medical B3 waste that had accumulated for almost a week.

"From where I don't know, only there if there is a sample of the name of the Serang Regency hospital. Some are outside of Banten too," he said.

His party has also appealed to residents not to approach the disposal area given the potential danger posed by medical B3 waste.

"This cross-agency coordination is expected to ensure that the hazardous waste is handled according to procedures and no longer poses a threat to the health and community environment of Walantaka," he said.
