BALIKPAPAN Provincial Government (Pemprov); North Kalimantan (Kaltara) continues to accelerate the provision of decent housing for the community through the National One Million Houses Program.
This commitment was emphasized by the Deputy Governor of Kaltara, Ingkong Ala, while attending the Coordination and Synergy Meeting of the 1 Million Urban Houses Program for the Kalimantan Region at the Balikpapan City Hall Auditorium, Wednesday, October 15.
In the forum attended by representatives of the provincial governments of East Kalimantan and South Kalimantan, Ingkong Ala emphasized that the housing sector was an important part of Indonesia's human development.
"This program is not only a matter of houses, but also building a civilization that is worthy and dignified for society," he said.
Deputy Governor Ingkong said Kaltara is currently facing serious challenges in the housing sector. Based on local government data, the household ownership backlog reached 27,127 households, while the resident backlog was 17,752 households until 2023.
In addition, rapid population growth also adds to the pressure on the availability of housing. Kaltara's population increased from 713,600 in 2021 to around 749,400 in 2025.
"This growth has an impact on the needs of cheap homes and basic infrastructure such as roads, clean water, and electricity, especially in urban areas such as Tarakan and Tanjung Selor," said Deputy Governor Ingkong.
Ingkong explained that despite being faced with major challenges, Kaltara also has the potential to develop a large area of housing. The government has prepared 222 hectares of land in a number of areas, especially in Malinau and Bulungan Regencies, which will become the location for the development of public housing.
In addition, strategic areas such as the Kayan River Corridor, Sembakung, Sewing, and Kota Baru Mandiri (KBM) Tanjung Selor are also said to have the potential to become a center for new settlement growth that is integrated with industrial and energy areas.
"We will direct housing development in Kaltara to be in line with the development of large industrial estates and infrastructure such as the Mentarang hydropower plant," he explained.
The Deputy Governor emphasized that the provision of decent houses cannot be done by the local government alone. He invited all parties to strengthen cross-sectoral collaboration, including business actors and the community.
"We want to ensure that every citizen of Kaltara has access to a safe, healthy, and habitable place to live. For this reason, synergy is needed between the central government, regional, business world, and the community," he stressed.
Through this coordination forum, the North Kalimantan Provincial Government hopes to create a real synergy to answer various challenges in the housing sector, especially in border and hinterland areas.
"With strong collaboration, we can realize the development of housing that is inclusive, sustainable, and reaches all levels of the people of Kalimantan," he concluded.
