JAKARTA - The Kremlin hopes that the Gaza peace plan initiated by US President Donald Trump will be implemented and will encourage peace in the Middle East.

Trump has the support of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a US-sponsored peace proposal to end the war that has lasted nearly two years in Gaza, but questions arise about whether Hamas will accept the plan.

"Russia has always supported and welcomed any of Trump's efforts aimed at ending the ongoing tragedy," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

"And, of course, we want this plan to be carried out and help end various events in the Middle East peacefully," he continued.

Russia has previously criticized Israel's military operations in Gaza over the past two years amid the increasingly close ties between Moscow and Israel's tough rivals, Iran.

Moscow has long suggested a two-state solution is the only way to resolve the conflict in the Middle East.
