27 High Risk Prisoners From Bali Moved To Nusakambangan

DENPASAR - Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections (Kanwil Ditjenpas) Bali transferred as many as 27 prisoners in the high risk category to correctional institutions (prisons) in Nusakambangan, Cilacap, Central Java.

"The sentence for life is projected in a maximum security prison. Well, the maximum security is in Nusakambangan," said Head of the Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections, Dicky Nurmansyah, quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, September 25.

In addition to life imprisonment, the convict who was transferred from a number of prisons/state detention centers (rutan) in Bali is also a prisoner sentenced to death.

Before being transferred, his party had undergone a series of assessments for these prisoners.

He added that the transferred prisoners have the potential to disrupt security in prisons if they are still united with other inmates with sentences below life or death.

Considering that prisoners for life and death did not get remission while being inmates, he continued, they were separated so as not to have a negative influence on other inmates.

Dicky added that there were no recommendations from certain parties regarding the transfer because it was a program of the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections (Kemenimipas).

"There is no request. So we collect prisoners who are at high risk, namely those who live a lifetime and the death penalty," he added.

One of the life-long prisoners who was transferred was Nyoman Susrama, who was involved in the murder case of a Balinese Radar print media journalist, Anak Agung Narendra Prabangsa in February 2009.

The journalist's body was found in the waters of Padangbai, Karangasem Regency, Bali, February 16, 2009.

Susrama was later sentenced to life by the Denpasar District Court in February 2010.

However, Susrama received a reduced sentence to 20 years in prison through Presidential Decree No. 29 of 2018.

After receiving protests from the public, including journalists, President Joko Widodo then canceled the decision and Susrama returned to life imprisonment.

Susrama languished in the Bangli Rutan, Bali before being moved to Kerobokan Prison, Badung Regency and is now being taken to Nusakambangan Prison.
