JAKARTA - The UN Temporary Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said Israeli unmanned aircraft dropped four grenades near peacekeepers who were clearing road blockades blocking access to UN positions.

"This is one of UNIFIL's most serious attacks on personnel and assets since the contract to terminate hostilities last November," UNIFIL said in a statement on Wednesday, September 3.

One grenade hit the target within 20 meters and three grenades within about 100 meters of UN personnel and vehicles.

UNIFIL said the Israeli military had been notified beforehand of the UNIFIL road clearing work in the region, southeast of Marwahin village.

Last week, the UN Security Council unanimously extended the peacekeeping mission in Lebanon until the end of 2026, after which the troop withdrawal in an orderly and safe manner would begin for a year.

Founded in 1978, UNIFIL patrolled the southern border of Lebanon with Israel.
