LUMAJANG - The Institute for Research and Community Service (LP2M) of the University of Jember (Unej) has withdrawn all students participating in the 2025 Collaborative Community Service Program (KKN) in Lumajang Regency, East Java, due to a surge in motor vehicle thefts.
"This policy was taken after two thefts of motor vehicles belonging to students participating in the 2025 Collaborative KKN, and yesterday, Friday (August 8th), a resident's motorcycle was lost near the KKN post," said Ali Badrudin, Secretary of LP2M Unej's Community Service Division, as reported by ANTARA on Saturday, August 9th.
According to him, the policy was taken to provide a sense of security and protection to students participating in the Collaborative KKN in the Banana City.
"We have held an online meeting with the Lumajang regional apparatus organizations (OPD) and the PICs of the sending campuses. The joint decision was made to withdraw all KKN students in Lumajang today," he said.
Several motorcycle theft incidents reportedly used the same method. Therefore, the incidents are considered no coincidence, as the loss of students' motorcycles was not due to negligence and was lost in a safe place.
"This is a shared opportunity to improve security in Lumajang. This doesn't mean we think Lumajang is not doing well, but we hope the Lumajang district government and police will move towards improvement," he said.
In the meeting, it was agreed that all state and private universities (PTN) would withdraw their students from 105 villages, totaling 1,328 students.
"The students began their collaborative community service program (KKN) on July 15, 2025, and were supposed to end on August 20, 2025. However, due to the high number of motorcycle thefts, they were withdrawn. This withdrawal is only for the Lumajang location, while other cities are continuing as scheduled," he said.
Previously, a motorcycle theft occurred involving students participating in the 2025 Collaborative Community Service Program (KKN) in Lumajang Regency. The first incident involved students participating in Alun-Alun Village, Ranuyoso District, where two motorcycles were stolen.
The motorcycle belonged to a student from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) of Jember State University (Unej), and the other belonged to a student from the State Islamic University (UIN KHAS) of Jember. The second incident involved Unej students conducting collaborative community service (KKN) in Tempeh Tengah Village, Tempeh District.
The third incident occurred in Lempeni Village, Tempeh District, where a resident's motorcycle was stolen near the KKN post. With the recovery, no more Collaborative KKN students have fallen victim to motorcycle theft in Lumajang.
Several state and private universities participating in the collaborative KKN program in Lumajang include Unej, UIJ, UIN KHAS, STIA Pembangunan, Poltekes Jember, Unipar, UniLu, and STKIP Lumajang.
