'War' With Illegal Cigarettes In Madura: Customs And Excise Collaborates With TNI, Police, And Prosecutors

PAMEKASAN - The Madura Customs Office, East Java, has strengthened supervision of the circulation of illegal cigarettes by cooperating with the TNI, Polri, Attorney General's Office, and the District Court.

This step was taken following the widespread findings of cigarettes without excise stamps in various areas of Madura Island.

Head of the Madura Customs Office Novian Dermawan said cross-agency synergy is the key in dealing with complexity in the field.

"With good cooperation and coordination, we can exchange information, formulate joint strategies, and carry out more integrated law enforcement," said Novian when met in Pamekasan, Antara, Sunday, July 27.

Since the past week, Madura Customs and Excise has been in intensive coordination with the Resort Police, Kodim, the District Attorney's Office, and the Pamekasan District Court. During the meeting, the leaders of the four institutions stated their commitment to support efforts to eradicate illegal cigarettes.

"They are ready to carry out joint operations, including a persuasive approach through education and direct socialization to the community," he added.

Novian said the circulation of illegal cigarettes in Madura was still relatively concerning. In the period January 1'21, 2025, Madura Customs and Excise had seized 5,004,659 illegal cigarettes worth around Rp. 7.5 billion.

Meanwhile, from February to June 2025, at least 10 cases of illegal cigarette shipments were successfully uncovered through joint operations in four districts in Madura.

"This figure shows that enforcement efforts must continue to be improved, especially since illegal cigarettes are very detrimental to the state and society," said Novian.

He hopes that the full support of law enforcement officers can be an additional force in suppressing the circulation of cigarettes without excise stamps in the Madura region.

"This illegal shop not only harms the state in terms of excise revenue, but also injures legal business actors who obey the rules," he said.
