PADANG - Pos Gunung Api (PGA) Marapi appealed to people living on the slopes of Mount Marapi in Agam Regency and Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra, to increase their vigilance, especially when it rains.
Gunung Marapi PGA officer, Teguh Purnomo, said the rain that flushed the area around the mountain had the potential to trigger cold lava flooding.
This potential arises because there is still a lot of volcanic material deposited at the top of the mountain since the last major eruption on December 3, 2023.
"Currently it is raining, we urge people who live around the slopes of the mountain as well as near the banks of the river that originates directly from Mount Marapi to be vigilant," said Teguh in Padang, Antara, Sunday, July 27.
He added that until now there has been no valid calculation of the volume of volcanic material left at the top of the mountain.
On Sunday afternoon at 13:44 WIB, Mount Marapi was also reported to have experienced an eruption. However, PGA could not observe the height of the ash column because it was covered by clouds.
"This eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 30.4 millimeters and a duration of 37 seconds," said Teguh.
Currently, the status of Mount Marapi is at Level II or Alert. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has issued a number of recommendations, including a ban on activities within a three-kilometer radius of Verbeek Crater, a center for volcanic activity as high as 2,891 meters above sea level (masl).
PVMBG also reminded the public to be aware of the potential for cold lava, especially for residents who live along the river that originates at the peak of Marapi, especially during the rainy season.
