JAKARTA - United States (US) PresidentDonald Trump decided to withdraw Uncle Sam's country from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Trump accused the organization of supporting progressive cultural and social issues, as well as being divisive, White House Deputy Spokesperson Anna Kelly said, as quoted by the New York Post newspaper, Tuesday, July 22.

"President Trump has decided to withdraw the United States from UNESCO which supports progressive cultural and social issues, and is divisive, which is completely inconsistent with the plausible policies chosen by the American people in November," Kelly said.

In a separate statement, US State Department Spokesman Tammy Bruce said the decision to withdraw from UNESCO would take effect from December 31 next year.

"Today, the United States notified Director-General Audrey Azoulay of the United States' decision to withdraw from UNESCO. Continuous involvement in UNESCO is not in line with the United States' national interests," BRUCE said.

The withdrawal will be effective from December 31, 2026 and the United States will remain a full member of UNESCO until then, he added.

Bruce explained that UNESCO's "globalist and ideological" agenda in international development contradicts the America First foreign policy.

He stressed the decision to recognize the Palestinian State, which he calls "very problematic", goes against US policies and helped strengthen the anti-Israeli rhetoric within the organization.
