JAKARTA - Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal submitted a letter of resignation on Tuesday, as part of the country's largest government reshuffle during the war period expected this week.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously nominated Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko to replace Shmyhal. Svyrydenko, who also serves as economic minister, is Zelenskyy's close and long-standing ally.

Shmyhal, who has served since March 2020, is expected to be appointed Ukraine's new defense minister, Zelensky said on Monday.

Parliament will vote for Svyrydenko's candidacy this weekend.

Zelenskyy said he had discussed priority tasks for the next six months with him.

"We are preparing the initial steps for the new government," he said on the Telegram app, while posting a photo of their meeting at his office.

Its main task is to increase domestic weapons production and carry out reforms to unlock Ukraine's economic potential.

The reshuffle, the largest since the Russian invasion of February 2022, comes as Russian forces continue to move forward in Ukraine's eastern region, and the prospect of a swift ceasefire deal looks gloomy.

Ukraine's economy is still smaller than before the war, although local businesses adapted to war realities and billions of foreign aid from Western allies Kyiv helped maintain macroeconomic stability.

Next year, the country faces a tough task of financing a budget deficit that swells as foreign aid will decrease. Ukrainian officials say the country will need around $40 billion in external financing by 2026.

Parliament is scheduled to vote for a new government nomination on Thursday, lawmakers said.
