JAKARTA - Chinese President Xi Jinping and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have shown a desire to increase bilateral trade amid the high-rate policy by US president Donald Trump.

In a meeting with Albanese at the People's Center of Agung, China on Tuesday, July 15, Xi praised China-Australia relations improving, saying their relationship had risen from "returning and turning around, and bringing real benefits" to the two nations.

Xi also said he was "looking for common ground while sharing differences" that served the fundamental interests of the two countries, while Albanese stressed the approach had resulted in "very positive benefits" for both countries.

In a veiled warning of Trump's tariff policy, Xi stressed the need for all countries to work together to uphold "justice and equality, multilateralism and free trade" in the face of "a changing and chaotic international situation," China's Foreign Ministry said.

Welcoming progress in the bilateral free trade agreement, which came into force in 2015, Albanese promised Australia would "maintain a strong supporter of free and fair trade," according to his office.

After the meeting, Albanese told reporters he agreed with Xi the dialogue "should be at the core of relations between the two countries."

"The two of them are also discussing economic partnerships and exploring future cooperation in various fields such as decarbonization," said his office.

Australian PM also expressed concern over China's military drills with live ammunition carried out in waters near Australia earlier this year without adequate prior notice, although China is said to have not violated international law regulations.

Albanese had traveled for a week to China with business delegates until Friday, which included a visit to Shanghai.

He will continue his journey to Chengdu in southwest Sichuan Province after his visit to Beijing.
