Speaker Of The House Of Representatives: Discussion Of The Election Bill Will Continue In Accordance With The Mechanism Of The DPR

JAKARTA - Chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, ensured that the discussion of the Draft Law on General Elections (RUU Pemilu) would be continued according to the applicable mechanism in the DPR.

The Election Bill will be handled by Commission II or Legislation Body (Baleg) after internal discussion of the leadership.

"We will follow up on Commission II later, according to the mechanism," said Puan Maharani at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday, July 15.

However, he stated that his party would still discuss further with the leadership of the DPR whether the discussion would continue in Commission II or be transferred to Baleg.

"We will follow up according to the mechanism, whether later it will be between Commission II and Baleg, we will still discuss it with the leadership," he said.

Previously, Deputy Chairman of Commission II of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Aria Bima, stated that the discussion of the Election Bill should be carried out in a codification, not with an omnibus law approach or separately.

According to him, the codification approach will unite various laws closely related to holding elections.

"How come I tend to be codified, instead of the omnibus law or individually," said Aria Bima in Senayan, Monday.

He assessed that the discussion in the nature of the codification would be more comprehensive and integrated between laws such as the Political Party Law, the Election Law, and the institutional rules for election organizers such as the KPU and Bawaslu.

"Because this is more a way of view, it must be holistic, interconnected between the Political Party Law, the Election Law, to the positions of institutions such as the DPR, the KPU Law, Bawaslu, all must be integrated into the same channel," he explained.

Aria Bima emphasized the importance of having a common perspective on democracy and elections, both in terms of organizers, supervisors, political parties, and voters.

However, he has not detailed in depth the form of grouping or the structure of the law that will be included in the codification process. He said that this still had to be discussed further, especially referring to the decision of the Constitutional Court (MK).

"Well, I'm not very deep yet, but what is clear must be bound by the Constitutional Court's decision. That's the first thing," he said.
